SUN CONSTELLATIONS – RASHIS
Rashi is the Sankrit word used for the Sun constellations which means “heap of stars” contained in a 30 degree portion of the sky showing the distance the Sun travels in 1 month. The Sun constellations refer to our earthly psychological nature and reveal more of our “human” motivations and personalities. Each of the Rashis are represented symbolically by earthly manifestations of animals, insects, humans and physical objects.
We can begin to understand the nature and functioning of the Grahas/Planets through the psychology of Rashis/Sun Constellations that they rule. Each Graha/Planet expresses through two Rashis/Sun Constellations revealing their masculine and feminine essence. The Sun and the Moon only express through one Rashi as the Sun is the definitive masculine energy and the Moon is the definitive feminine energy.

We can begin to piece together an understanding of the psychology and motivations of each of the 12 Rashis by understanding their combined expressions through one of the 4 Elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and one of the 3 Gunas (Rajas, Tamas and Sattva). Ether, the fifth element, is not embodied in the 12 Rashis as it is the space which contains the 4 elements. Ether is considered closest to spirit and the all encompassing connection to the source of our elemental earthly life.
FIRE ~ EARTH ~ AIR ~ WATER
ARIES – LEO – SAGITTARIUS
Dharma and sense of ones duties in the world. It brings about the qualities of leadership, pride and passion and puts them into action. They are dynamic, innovative, strong willed, determined, independent, forceful and dramatic. They can be argumentative, egotistical, domineering and self-promoting. They make good entertainers, athletes, actors and other public personas.
TAURUS ~ VIRGO ~ CAPRICORN
Acquisition of material comfort and sustenance. They can be practical, reliable and committed and provide security and safety. They can get overly attached to material comforts and can be unimaginative and resistant to change. They make good healers, doctors, farmers and bankers and all other types of work that deal with the practical side of life.
GEMINI ~ LIBRA ~ AQUARIUS
Desire and pleasure played out through the mind and social relationships. Having a mental and intellectual approach they can be communicative, changeable, creative and artistic. Can lean towards impracticality, confusion, deceptiveness, fantasy, and nervousness. They make good writers, marketers, artists, philosophers, and lecturers.
CANCER ~ SCORPIO ~ PISCES
The inner movement towards fulfillment and liberation through devotion and emotion. Being more intuitive, reflective, emotional, nurturing and compassionate. They can be overly sensitive and intense and can get stagnate and destructive when they believe in something. They make good healers, nurses, cooks, psychics, creative writers and teachers.
Along side the elemental qualities of the 12 Rashis we further qualify their expression through the 3 energetic states of existence, CHARA (movable), STHIRA (fixed), and DWISHWA (dual).
MOVABLE – CHARA
ARIES ~ CANCER ~ LIBRA ~ CAPRICORN
Action oriented and positive with an outgoing nature. They can be great leaders and initiators acting impulsive and willful with self confidence. They can also get too forceful, arrogant and overambitious.
FIXED – STHIRA
TAURUS ~ LEO ~ SCORPIO ~ AQUARIUS
Reflective, neutral and stable. They can be the most determined and reliable but may get too rigid and stagnant in their ways.
DUAL – DWISHWA
GEMINI ~ VIRGO ~ SAGITTARIUS ~ PISCES
Adaptable, flexible and changeable. They are thinkers and communicators with quick wit and fickle mind. They can be unstable, erratic and unreliable and can lean towards being introverted and subtle.
We can further understand each of the Rashis through either a masculine or feminine expression. The fire and air signs are masculine and the earth and water signs are feminine.
